US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served in the US House of Representatives from Michigan's 2nd congressional district from March until December 1917. After teaching school in Bolivar, Missouri, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in July 1876, and established a law practice in Fairfield, Illinois, where he served as the city attorney. After living in Florida for a number of years, he relocated to Wyandotte, Michigan, in 1895 and became associated with the Michigan Alkali Company and was elected to Congress in March 1917. His election was successfully contested by his predecessor and opponent, Democrat Samuel W. Beakes, and Beakes won his seat back on December 13, 1917. During his short tenure, he voted against the US declaring war on Germany in April 1917. He was not a candidate for re-nomination in 1918 and he retired from politics.
