Harry "Buck" Meek Jr., 68, of Hope, passed away at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, September 30, 2010, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Buck had been temporarily employed at his old job at DWU for the last couple of years, enjoying seeing his old friends. He retired in 2005 after 28 years with Cummins Engine Company. He was owner of Meek's Grocery in Hope for 10 years and in his early years was a 15-year employee of Golden Foundry.

As a young man he served his country in the U.S. Army, and served his community for 10 years as a reserve deputy in Hope. He then went on to serve 25 years as a reserve deputy at the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department and retired in December 2009.

Buck was a member of First Baptist Church of Hope, w h e re he had served as moderator and trustee. He was a current member of Hope Town Council and had served several terms as board president. He served several years as chairman of the board at Ceraland and was currently head of their security team.

Buck was also a member of Hope Masonic Lodge and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren and attending their school and sporting events. He was one of the biggest fans of all Hauser ballgames. He always enjoyed being with people and helping in any way he could.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Hope with Mr. Meek's grandson, Drew Meek, and Tim Tallent officiating. Calling will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Norman Funeral Home at Hope and from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. Burial with military graveside rites will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Hope Food Bank.

Born July 18, 1942, in Columbus, Mr. Meek was the son of Harry Sr. and Waldean Holcomb Meek. He married Nellie Hartwell March 20, 1964.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Brian (Jan) Meek and Doug Meek, both of Hope; a special cousin, Jeff (Tina) Barnes; two sisters, Patricia (Charlie) Goins of Columbus and Carolyn (Bob) Dickerson, of North Carolina; three brothers, Harold (Cheryl) Meek and Steve (Lisa) Meek, both of Columbus, and Greg (Kim) Meek of Taylorsville; seven grandchildren, Andrew, Kaylene, Sam, Stephanie and Brooke Meek, all of Hope, Emily Bruer of Hamilton, Ohio, and Devin Pollert of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
