Educator. She was credited as being one of the first female professors in the United States. She served as a professor of English and history at Swarthmore College from 1869 to 1879 and professor of rhetoric and elocution at the University of Minnesota from 1880 to 1909. She graduated from the New Britain Normal School in 1855 before teaching in various schools for twelve years. Throughout her life, she lectured on being a patriot, having good morals, and other subjects that she instilled in her students. In 1959 she was chosen as one of two Minnesotans to be honored with a statue in Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol Building.
