JACKSON -- Dr. Darryl Dean 78, of Los Alamos, NM passed away on Saturday, February 19, 2011 in Albuquerque, NM. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Darryl was born on September 2, 1932 in Lexington, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his mother Minnie Irene Standridge; father Soloman Samson Jackson and sisters Fae Atkinson and Edith Shook.

Darryl graduated from South High School in Denver, Colorado in 1950. He attended college at the University of Oklahoma, receiving his BS in 1955 and MS degree in 1956, both in Chemistry. Darryl received his PhD in Radiochemistry from the University of New Mexico in 1968.

In 1954 he started working as a summer graduate student at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and hired on permanently in 1956, working at LANL until his retirement in 1998. After retirement, he maintained an office in the CMR building, devoting time to sharing his knowledge with and mentoring members of the actinide analytical chemistry group.

Darryl was a Member of the American Chemical Society since 1955, as well as the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Los Alamos. Darryl is survived by his wife of 51 years, Doris Corley Jackson of Los Alamos; his son, David Jackson of Santa Fe; his son, Damon Jackson and wife, Julia Jackson of San Diego, CA and cousin Loretta Pursel of Port Hadlock, WA. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Los Alamos on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Los Alamos Heart Council at PO Box 749, Los Alamos, NM 87544.
