Aviation Pioneer. Born Walter Richard Brookins in Dayton, Ohio, he was part of airplane inventors Orville and Wilbur Wright early flight team. In 1909, he became the first civilian student to learn to fly at the Wright Brothers' Flying School. He became the Wrights' first pilot instructor and came into prominence when he made a new world's record for altitude of 4,380 feet on June 14, 1910. He later set world records for endurance and in his Wright biplane, became the first person to fly at an altitude of one mile.
