Leon E. Schmidlap, 85, of Lexington, died Friday, March 11, 2011, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 15, 1925, in Jefferson County, the son of William C. and Ruth Barron Schmidlap. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving from Nov. 15, 1943, to April 25, 1946. He retired in 1984 from the department of ammunition processing at Jefferson Proving Ground, where he worked for 30 years. After retirement, he and his wife owned and operated the Bear-In-Mind Craft Shop for eight years. He was quartermaster of the Hanover Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10528 and a member of Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion. He was a member of Kent Christian Church since 1934, and had served as Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder and chairman of the board. He enjoyed reading, word search puzzles, mowing his yard and playing computer solitaire.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie A. Perkinson Schmidlap, whom he married May 10, 1946; two daughters, Sandra Smith and Shirley LeGrand, both of Madison; one son, Gary Schmidlap of Kent; three granddaughters; two great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Elsie Moore on May 12, 2008 and Helen Eppley on July 14, 2008 and three brothers, Glen Schmidlap on March 28, 1990; William Schmidlap on June 19, 1926 and Clarence Schmidlap on October 19, 1919,

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vail-Holt Funeral Homes Hilltop Chapel. Burial will be in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted graveside by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Kent Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10528 or the American Cancer Society. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
