Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the US Navy at New Jersey and served as a Fireman First Class. His citation reads: "On board the USS Iowa, 25 January 1905. Following the blowing-out of the manhole plate of boiler D of that vessel, Behne displayed extraordinary heroism in he resulting action". He died of Pneumonia at the US Naval Base #5, Brest, France. He was originally buried in Brest (Kerfautras) Cemetery, Pretagne, France, however he was reinterrred to New Jersey on May 23, 1920.
