When Leon arrived in Vietnam he was assigned to Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Leon died of as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body from a hostile mortar attack while participating in Operation Virginia Ridge.
Survived by his wife, Ellen M Culverhouse of Lomita, his mother, Dorothy M Volmerding of Torrance and his father, Walter R Culverhouse of Sunland, California.
