Son of Kittie Elizabeth Chestnut and William George Brinson.

He was named after his grandfather James McCabe Brinson (1808 - 1860).

He attended the Academy of New Bern, NC, and received his degree of L.B. from Wake Forest College in 1887. He studied law in the office of Charles C. Clark of New Bern, and was admitted to practice in February, 1889.

He relocated to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in August 1889, and to Cripple Creek, Colorado, in January 1895. He practiced law, ran for Colorado Attorney General in 1894, served as Teller Co. attorney 1900-1901, and Cripple Creek city attorney 1907-1908.

James married first at age 26, as a resident of Colorado, in Wake Forest, Wake Co., NC, April 24, 1893, Mary H. Carter, age 20, of Wake Co., NC, daughter of Joseph E. Carter, dead, and Priscilla Dickerson Burton, living in Wake Co., NC.

Mr. Jas. M. Brinson, of Colorado was married at Wake Forest College Tuesday morning to Miss Mary Carter; of that place formerly of Colorado Springs. Mr. and Mrs. Brinson arrived last night to spend a short time in the city with the parents of the groom.

Mary H. Carter, #157419111, was born in Mason Co., Kentucky, October 28, 1872; died at age 85 in Asheville, Buncombe, North Carolina, May 12, 1958; buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, NC; last residence Hendersonville, Henderson Co., NC.

James and Mary apparently divorced before 1900, when she and her son were listed in the 1900 Census in both Murfreesboro, TN, and Wake Co., NC. She was a music teacher at the Deaf, Dumb, and Blind School in Wake Co., NC. She and her son George lived in New Orleans, LA in 1930; moved to Monroe, LA, in 1931.

He married second in Cripple Creek, Teller Co., Colorado, October 15, 1900, Grace Wilhelmina Boland, #66832663, born in Muscatine Co., Iowa, February 13, 1882; living in 1930.

Grace was the daughter of Clara Mary Myer (Meier), #64838792, b. 1863, d. 1924, and James H. Boland, b. 1855, d. 1905, all residents of Cripple Creek, Colorado.
Clara and James had children:
