Phebe GRISWOLD was the daughter John GRISWOLD and Hannah LEE. She was born on 19 Apr 1716 in Lyme, New London Co., Connecticut.

She married Mr. Jonathan PARSONS, son of Ebenezer PARSONS and Margaret MARSHFIELD, on 1 Dec 1731 in Lyme, New London Co., CT.

They had 13 children, six of whom died in infancy. The seven who lived to marry are as follows:

1. Lt Col. Marshfield PARSONS
b. 7 Feb 1733 Lyme, New London Co. CT. Married four wives:
1st wife Lois WAIT, by whom he had a son, John, whose descendants are numerous, living mostly in the State of Ohio and the western part of the State of New York. One of them was the wife of Rev. D. Bradley, M. 1)., missionary at Bangkok, in Siara.
2nd wife Abigail MARVIN, 20 Nov. 1766
3rd wife Abigail Waterman, 15 Jan. 1783
4th wife Phebe Taber Griffin, 10 Oct. 1793.
Marsfield died on 13 Jan 1813 in Lyme, New London, Co., CT.

2. Capt. Jonathan PARSONS
b. 25 Apr 1735, Lyme, New London, Co., CT. Resided at Newburyport, Essex Co., MA. Was a distinguished Christian shipmaster, died at sea on 29 Dec 1784. Married Hannah GYLES of Salisbury, MA on 26 Aug 1756 in Newburyport. They had four sons, but they all died unmarried, and the name of Parsons is extinct in that branch. He had also six daughters. (this is incomplete list, still researching).

2) Elizabeth 1759-, married 1st, Samuel Chandler, and 2nd, John Mycall
3) Jonathan Parsons 1761-1776
4) Hannah, married Abraham Jackson
5) Lois, married Jacob Stone
6) Mary L., married Nathaniel Brown
7) Phebe 1776-1836, married Samuel Mulliken
8) Lucia 1778-1826, died unmarried.

3. Maj-Gen Samuel Holden PARSONS
b. 14 May 1737, Lyme, New London, Co., CT. He graduated from Harvard College in 1756, studied law, and settled in Middletown, CT. Was a Major-General in the Revolutionary army, and was an aide to George Washington, by whom he was appointed Governor of the Northwestern Territory. In Nov. 1789 he wrote his wife that he was about to set out on Lake Erie to survey the Connecticut Western Reserves, he wrote his wife. Somewhere in the Big Beaver Creek, he drowned. His body was found in the following year in May 1790. His actual burial ground was not found, but there is a cenopah in CT. His wife moved back to Connecticut after his death.
Samuel married Mehetabel MATHER of Lyme and had seven children, three sons and four daughters. His three sons were:
1) William Walter PARSONS, who left no son;
2) Enoch PARSONS, lived in Hartford, CT.
3) Samuel PARSON
His daughters were:
4) Lucia, who married Hon. Stephen Titus HOSMER of Middletown
5) Mehetabel, who married Dr. W. B. HAIL, of Middletown
6) Phebe, who married Samuel TIFFIN
7) Margaret, who married 1st Stephen HUBBARD of Middletown, and 2nd Alfred LATHROP, Esq. of Carthage.

4. Thomas PARSONS
b. 28 Apr 1739, Lyme, New London, Co., CT. He was a shipmaster, and resided at Newburyport. He was missing at sea, he may have been murdered in Feb 1772. He married Mary GIBSON and had one son Jonathan Gibson Parson, who
married, but left no son, and the name Parsons is extinct in this branch.
Capt. Thomas Parsons married 2nd to Sarah SAWYER of Newbury and had three daughters:
1) Sarah, who married Gorham PARSONS, another branch
of the family but they had no children.
2) Anna, who married Fitz William SARGENT of Gloucester, Essex Co., MA
3) Man, who married Ignatius SARGENT.

5. Phobe PARSONS
b. 6 Mar 1748 in Newburyport, MA. She married Capt. Ebenezer LANE of Boston and died there, leaving no children, in 1751, aged 33.

6. Lucia PARSONS
b.23 Dec 1752 Newbury, Essex Co., MA. Married Capt. Joseph TAPPAN, of the same place, and died there in May, 1815, aged 63.
They had three children:
1) Phebe, wife of Dow, of Norwich, CT.
2) Sarah
3) Thomas Parsons.

7. Lydia PARSONS
b. 3 Apr 1755 in Newburyport, MA. She married Capt. Moses GREENLEAF and died at Williamsburg, Pitacaquis Co., Maine on 21 Mar 1834. They had five children: Moses, Clarina, Ebenezer, Simon, and Jonathan.


Phebe Griswold Parsons died on 20 Dec 1770 in Newburyport, Essex Co., MA.

In the following year, Mr. Parsons married Mrs. Lydia Clarkson, the widow of Andrew Clarkson, Esq. of Portsmouth, N. H. Jonathan died in Newburyport a few years later. She survived him.

NOTE: This Phebe GRISWOLD has been confused with Phebe BALDWIN, daughter of Thomas BALDWIN and Abigail LAY. The Griswold Family Association confirmed that Phebe GRISWOLD was the one who married Rev. Jonathan PARSONS, NOT Israel POST. It was Phebe BALDWIN who married Dr. Israel POST, Sr. of Hebron, CT.
