United States Marine Corps General. He became the commanding general of the Marine Reserves in 1970. He served in the South Pacific in World War II and in Vietnam in 1965. He also served in the Korean War. He served as technical advisor on the film "Sands of Iwo Jima" in 1949. He played in the legendary World War II "Mosquito Bowl" football game on Guadalcanal in 1944.
