US Congressman. Successful in foreign trade business pursuits, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-seventh Congress, serving (1861-63). Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the New Jersey State Senate, (1865,68), Mayor of Morristown, (1865-69) and a trustee of Drew Theological Seminary, until his death at age 56. He was killed in an accident while on the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad line.
