Maine Governor, U.S. Senator. Educated at the Hebron Academy and the Boston Business School, he established a successful career in the farming and corn packing industries. He was a member of the Maine House of Representatives, (1896-98) and was a member of the Maine State Senate, (1898-1902). In 1908, he was elected as a Republican the 47th Governor of Maine, serving until 1911. As Governor, the first conservation commission was initiated which authorized the protection of the state’s water supply and forests and the new state capitol building was built in Augusta. After leaving office, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, in 1916 and served until his death at age 68.
