Husband of Susan (Mercer) Ryle, aged 60 years.

William Ryle was the second son of John Ryle, the pioneer of the silk industry in the United States. William was a silk manufacturer like his father, but also channeled his interests in other areas. William Ryle was the President of the Silk City Bank in Paterson for many years and was also the co-founder, along with his father, John Ryle, of the Passaic Water Company, later the Passaic Valley Water Commission. After his father's death in 1887, one of William Ryle's partners in the Passaic Water Company was Garret Hobart, the future Vice-President of the United States under President William McKinley.

William Ryle served in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. A U. S. Navy Seaman, he served aboard the U.S.S. Savannah.

William Ryle was a collector of art and was a close friend of Julian Rix, noted American landscape artist. When Julian Rix died, William Ryle sought to it to have him interred in the Ryle family plot at Cedar Lawn Cemetery.

William and Susan Ryle lived the rest of their lives at their mountain estate named "Will-Sue" in North Caldwell, New Jersey. They had no children. After his wife died, William Ryle sold his 78 acre "Will-Sue" to opera singer Ernestine Schumann-Heink. William died at "Will-Sue" but was serenaded several times before his death by Mme. Schumann-Heink who tried to comfort him in his final days with her piano playing and angelic voice.
