He received his bachelor of service degree in education from the University of North Dakota in 1930 and later his master's degree from UND. He taught high school in Hawley, MN from 1930-33. He married Irene Horn December 26, 1931, Grand Forks. He taught high school in Grand Forks from 1933-40. He served in the US Army from 1940 to 1946 and was discharged with the rank of colonel. He served as the Veterans Administration training officer in Grand Forks until 1954.
