Classicist and Latin Scholar. He was the author of "Wheelock's Latin" (1956), originally called "Latin: An Introductory Course Based on Ancient Authors", considered by many experts to be the paramount Latin college textbook, now in its seventh edition. The first three editions sold over 750,000 copies and the current tally for all editions is over one million. Originally the book was created from a series of lecture notes. Unusual for the time, the book used passages from ancient authors rather than created sentences as examples, so that the student would also receive an introduction to Latin literature. In 1967, he added a reader, "Latin Literature: A Book of Readings", to compliment his first book. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1933. He taught at Haverford College, Harvard University, College of the City of New York, Brooklyn College, Cazenovia Junior College, and the University of Toledo, where he retired as full professor in 1968. After retirement, he published his final book: "Quintilian as Educator" (1974).
