The son of John Jr & Catherine (Cruickshank) Dougall of Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, William married Annie Lyon Park on 4 Jun 1872 in Glasgow. They were married at 25 Hutcheson Street; witnesses to the marriage were Robert Lightbody Allan, bookseller of 151 Renfrew Street, Glasgow and John Renfrew of 40 Warwick Street, also Glasgow.

Children with Annie:
1) John Park Dougall (1874-1960); m1. Erie Edith Dungey (1873-1926); m2. Gertrude Helen Bennett (1886-1935); m3. Cecile Elvira Selinger )1901-1985).
2) Kate Annie Dougall (1876-aft 1908).
3) Helen Selina Dougall (1878-1946); m. Jay Ralph Lockwood (1871-1948).
4) William Dougall Jr (1881-aft 1908); m. Mattie M Blewett (1884-1957).
5) Kenneth Matthew Dougall (1882-1978); m. Fannie Verena Koenig (1888-1965).
6) Jessie Miller Dougall (1884-1957); m. Edgar Cook Croughan )1899-1973).
7) Infant Dougall (1886-1886).
8) Sydney Lyon Dougall (1888-1976); never married.

In 1871, William worked as an "Out Door Officer Customs" in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1874 he was a Mercantile Clerk in the same city. By 1876 William and his family had immigrated to New Zealand, later setting up shop as a professional photographer in Invercargill.

Excerpt from "Southland Times", 17 Jul 1884:
"In fitting up his new studio in Esk street Mr. W. Dougall has had an eye to the comfort of his patrons as well as to the most convenient disposal of the appurtenances pertaining to his business. The waiting and dressing rooms are well furnished, and so arranged as to be in the most suitable positions in connection with the studio. As a whole the premises have been carefully and intelligently planned...."

Sometime between Jan and Sep 1891, William and his family immigrated to Santa Rosa, California, in the Sonoma Valley. Talking about his future home, William wrote in an article published in the Timaru Herald, Vol LIII, Issue 5232, 5 Sep 1891, Pg. 4, in part:
"There is, so far as I know, only one Santa Rosa on earth, and this is it. Just think, a town of 8000 population, broad clean streets... with the choicest shade trees, a hundred different kinds I am sure; every house with its beautiful and well kept garden plot. To day the temperature was 84 deg. at 8 a.m., and 98 at 1 p.m., and it was quite pleasant. We get our last rain about the middle of June — frequently in May — and then no more till October, and last season it was in January, and then only light until March, and, of course, only at intervals — a day now and then. The canneries are starting up for the season, and they employ all assistance they can get. Indeed, the schools are so arranged as to be closed during the push, so that all the children may go and help. Girls frequently make 12 dollars (£2 10s) a week and sometimes more, but fresh hands seldom make more than one dollar a day at first. The best people go — and even ministers' daughters work in the canneries, and last year the wife of a popular minister in an adjoining town went to work at picking hops. It is not dishonourable for anyone to work in America."

On Nov 9, 1908, William became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America.

1920 Census-Los Angles City CA, 7th Jan:

The Los Angeles Times, 26 Apr 1924, Saturday, Pg 20:
"W. Dougall Dies at Loma Linda; Funeral Today
William Dougall, 78 years of age, father of Dr. J. P. Dougall of Los Angeles, died Thursday at his home in Loma Linda. He was a retired artist and had lived in Los Angeles thirty years.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Pierce Brothers, undertakers. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.
He leaves besides Dr. Dougall, the following children: Mrs. Catherine Reud, Riverside; Mrs. J. R. Lockwood, Glendale; William Dougall, Pamona; K. M. Dougall, Los Angeles; Mrs. E. C. Croughan, Los Angeles, and Sidney Dougall, Riverside."

William must have been a fascinating man. Trying to obtain permission to post a couple of his many pictures. There were quite a few nature photos as well as many portraits of families and individuals.

A very special thank you to an anonymous source who directed me to so much wonderful information regarding William. Also a special thank you to Greg for the tombstone photo which is so much appreciated.

William is my son's 3rd paternal Gr-Grandfather.
