Mr. Surls, of the Masonic Village in Aleppo, died Saturday from heart disease. He was 93. After graduating from Perry High School in 1936, Mr. Surls worked as a crane operator. During World War II, he served with an anti-aircraft battalion in Newfoundland before returning home and landing a job with the Pennsylvania Railroad, where he reached the level of administrator before retiring in 1970. That is when he began a second career, this time as a borough manager. He and his wife, Madeline McKenzie Surls, who died in 2008, traveled extensively, including trips to New England.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Richard D. Cole Funeral Home, 328 Beaver St., Sewickley, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will follow at Jefferson Memorial Cemetery.
