Andy Frederick Kilmer, Joyce Kilmer's older brother, was born January 12, 1873, in Binghamton, NY. He was educated in the New Brunswick High School, NJ, Rutger's College Preparatory School and Rutger's College, class of 1896. He served an apprenticeship to the printing trade and passed to journeyman printer. When Andy was a young boy, he fell deeply in love with a girl whom his family deemed unsuitable. He was sent on a long vacation "The Grand Tour," to forget her. While he was gone, she died. Eventually, he married Rebecca Ellen McLean of New York City, who looked exactly like his lost love. They were married on March 30, 1894, and had a daughter, Eleanor. Andy was employed in the advertising department of the Brunswick Pharmacal Company (Johnson and Johnson, NY), and "was known to be a young man of exceptional capability and enterprise." His younger brother Joyce, the famous poet of "Trees" fame, was born December 06.1886, and greatly looked up to his older brother, whom he dearly loved.Anda killed himself on September 09, 1899, at the Clarendon Hotel in Philadelphia. He was only 26 years old. After Anda's death, Andy and Joyce's mother, Annie Kilburn Kilmer, increased her tendency to cling to and dominate Joyce, her one remaining son. The death of Andy may have influenced Joyce to move even more deeply into the world of prose and poetry.
