Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a First Sergeant in the 6th Cavalry, US Army. On January 1, 1891, First Sergeant Smith was in command of a supply train escort at White River, South Dakota. As the train prepared to cross a partially frozen White River, they were engaged by a force of 300 Sioux Indians. With only four men, First Sergeant Smith repelled the attack by the superior enemy force, held his position and prevented the Indian warriors from capturing the supply wagons. For distinguished bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Remaining in the Army, he served in the Spanish American War, Philippines, World War I and retired a Colonel.
