U.S. Continental Congressman, U.S. Senator. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, studied law at the University of Oxford England, then returned to Virginia and practiced law in Dumfries. During the Revolutionary War, served as a Colonel and aide-de-camp to General George Washington and was commissioner of the Board of War, (1780-81). Entering politics, he was a member of Virginia House of Delegates, (1784-85) and a member of the Continental Congress, (1785-87). In 1889, he was elected to the United States Senate and served until his death at 50.
