Michael Michel immigrated from his home of Quatzenheim, Bas Rhin, Alsace, France arriving in the United States on March 13, 1852. He spent 2 years in Cincinnati, Ohio following his trade as a shoe cobbler. He moved to Iowa and married Salome Kraemer of Ingenheim, Bas Rhin, Alsace, France on October 17, 1855 in Decorah, Iowa. They first settled in Winneshiek, then later Howard County, Iowa and raised 9 children, 8 boys and 1 girl. Michael Michel is listed as one of the founders of the Lutheran church in Locust, Winneshiek Co., Iowa (now called St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church). He was known to be a good advisor and an extremely charitable man. Later he belonged to the Lutheran Church in Granger, Fillmore County, Minnesota which he donated the lumber to build. Most of the first generation of Michels are buried in St. Matthew's Lutheran cemetery.
