Publisher. Born one of eight children, he trained with his brothers to follow their father as a paper merchant. They took over the business in 1847 and moved it to Leipzig in 1850. Fraternal disagreement led to his departure from the family business, and he moved to Berlin where he founded his own paper business. From 1871 to 1877 he served on the Berlin city council. In 1877, he purchased the "New Berliner Tageblatt" and converted it into an independent newspaper. He then founded the publishing house Ullstein Verlag, and in 1894, he purchased the "Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung", a weekly illustrated magazine, the first mass-market German magazine. The "Berliner Morgenpost" was established in 1898. The company was responsible for the publication of the first German children's magazine, and popular fashion magazines. At the time of his death, he employed 1,600 people and was the most successful publisher in Berlin. His five sons continued the business, and in 1903 they branched out, founding Ullsteinhaus book publishing. By the time the business was seized by the Nazis in 1937, it was the largest publishing house in Europe.
