Medical Doctor and Surgeon, Inventor of Laparoscopy. He studied medicine at the University of Leipzig and, due to his military service, at the Unversity of Berlin. He graduated from Leipzig in 1890, with an emphasis on gastroenterology, and then continued his education in Berlin in 1891, which was noted for research in this area. He opened a practice in that field in Dresden in 1896 and also began to research endoscopic techniques, inventing an early endoscope. He is considered to have performed the first laparoscopic procedure in 1901, on a dog, and pioneered the method of inflating the abdominal region to increase visibility and inhibit bleeding. He is honored today by the von Mikulicz-Radecki-Georg Kelling Endoscopic Surgery Award from the German Society of Surgeons. He and his second wife were killed in the Allied bombing of Dresden in 1945. Their house was completely destroyed, and no remains were ever found, so this is a cenotaph.
