US Congressman. Born in Cazenovia, New York, he graduated from Union College in 1843, studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Chicago, Illinois, then moved to Potosi, Wisconsin in 1845 and continued to practice law. In 1849, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first Congress, serving until 1851. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and served as chief justice of the Wisconsin State Supreme Court, (1855-92). He then again resumed the practice of law until his death at 83 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
