U.S. Congressman. Born in Queensbury, New York, he moved to Wisconsin, in 1846, attended the University of Wisconsin, studied law in Albany, New York, was admitted to the bar in 1856 and commenced to practice law in Juneau, Wisconsin. He was Prosecuting Attorney of Jefferson County, (1861-62), Assistant Attorney General of Wisconsin, (1865-66), then moved to Chicago, Illinois and resumed the practice of law. In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth Congress, serving until 1881. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he was receiver of the land office at Mitchell, South Dakota, (1881-88) returned to Chicago, continued the practice of law and served as master in chancery of the Cook County Superior Court, (1891-14). Retiring from public life, he was involved in business interests until his death at age 89 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
