Tennessee Governor U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to Tennessee, in 1785, he and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He served in the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1797-1805), later became Colonel in the Tennessee Militia and was a Brigadier General in command of the Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, during the War of 1812. After the war, he was a member of the Tennessee State Senate, (1821-29) and was elected as a Democrat the 7th Tennessee Governor, serving in 1829. In 1831, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-second Congress, serving until 1833. After leaving Congress, he lived in retirement at his farm until his death at age 81.
