Ruth attended Tarbox Elementary School in Nashville; Hume Fogg High School in Nashville; Middle Tennessee State Normal College in Murfreesboro, TN; George Peabody College for Teachers (from which she received her degree) and the University of Oregon for further study.

She taught in Como, NC; Tipperary School in LaVergne, TN (being its first teacher); and in Lynchburg, TN. She then worked in Washington, DC for Speaker of the House, Joseph W. Burns.

In 1921 Ruth moved to Burns, OR where she taught school for 20 years, after which she moved to Harbor, OR, where she taught for another 16 years. In 1958 she retired after 36 years of teaching.
