Burdett Porter was adopted by Mary Emery's uncle Robert Mead. Mary was living with Robert and Laura Mead, which is documented on the 1880 census. Burdett Porter is also living with them.
Family information places Mary's birth July 28, 1852. Census records place her birth in 1854. Mary's mother, Cynthia Caroline (Mead) Emery died on October 3, 1855, shortly after giving birth to Mary's brother Willis Emery in September of 1855. Mary's father, Rufus Emery went on to marry his first cousin, Phillyra (Emery) Pettis on November 23, 1858. With Phillyra, Rufus Emery had six more children, Stella, Stanton, Dora, Zilla, Ray, and Earl. The birth date of 1856 originally stated on this memorial was from a cemetery transcription and was in error.
It is not clear who if any children are attributed to Mary and Burdett Porter. On the 1900 census 3 children are counted with three children still living, yet there are no children living with them on the census record. It would seem the children if any would be to young to be on their own in 1900. One researcher placed Henry Rufus Porter as one of their children. The Green Lawn records state his father was D.A. Porter not Burdett Porter. The letter "D" may have been a transcription error. The middle name of Rufus is the same as Mary's father's name so this is a good indicator that Henry is Mary's child.
