US Congressman, US Senator. He graduated from Yale College in 1773, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1775 and commenced practice in New Haven, Connecticut. During the Revolutionary War, he captain of the Governor’s foot guards when New Haven, was invaded by the British in 1779. After the war, he was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, and a member Connecticut State Council. In 1791, he was elected as a Federalist to the Second, Third and Fourth Congresses, serving until 1796. After leaving Congress, he was elected to the United States Senate, serving 1796, until he resigned in 1810. He then was treasurer of Yale College until his death.
