New York Governor. After graduating from Princeton University, in 1773, he served in the Revolutionary War, as a Captain in the New York Militia and later became the Quartermaster General for the Department of New York. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in New York City. Entering politics, he served as a member of the New York Assembly, (1789-92), was New York Attorney General, (1791-92) and was a New York Supreme Court Justice, in 1801. In 1804, he was elected as a Democrat-Republican, the 3rd New York Governor, serving until 1807. During his term, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point was established, the state’s militia system was restructured and educational improvements were sanctioned. After leaving office, he served as a member of the New York State Senate, (1810-14). During the War of 1812, he served as a Major General and commanded forces at the Battle of Fort George, Canada. After the war, he was involved in the establishment of New York University and was president of the New York Historical Society, until his death.
