U.S. Congressman. He was a teacher, studied law and during the War of 1812, served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Volunteers and took part in the defense of Sackets Harbor in 1813. After the war, he was admitted to the bar in 1815, practiced law in Watertown, New York and was a judge advocate in the New York State Militia. He was a member of the New York State Senate in 1823 and United States attorney for the northern district of New York, (1823-30). In 1831, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-second, Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1836. He was appointed circuit judge in 1836, and was Attorney General of the State of New York, serving (1836-38). He was again elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth Congress, serving (1843- 44). He then was associate judge of the New York Supreme Court, (1844-47). Declining another term as being appointed chief justice, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 70.
