Maria Buchanan was the fifth of eleven children born to James and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan. She was married three times: first husband Jesse Magaw, MD, having one daughter; second marriage Thomas Samuel Johnson with no children; and third marriage Charles M. Yates, MD, having three sons and two daughters.

She was also a sister of President James Buchanan.
