Gate City, VA — (Loving Father, Grandfather, and Friend), James M. Estep, 95, entered into rest with the Lord on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 13, 2008).
He was born in Scott County, Va. on Nov. 13, 1912.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Callie Poston Estep Christian and Henry Estep; his loving wife; Nettie Hammonds Estep; infant son, James Henry Estep; granddaughter, Trina Georgina Gibson; and great grandson, Dustin Estepp; sisters, Vesta Williams, July Tipton, Ester Speers and Gladys Darnell.
J.M. is survived by his children, Nora Wallace, Johnny and Dora Estepp, Lorine Harless, Virginia and Bill Davenport, Sue Gibson, Phyllis and Carlos Gibson, Terry and Leonard Davenport, Jackie Gillenwater and friend, Mike Ellis, Randy and Martha Estepp; two brothers, Ben Christian and Everet (Chris) Christian; one sister, Clayla Grogan.
He is also survived by 43 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Services will be at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Wrightly Salling and Rev. G.W. White officiating.
Music will be provided by family and friends.
Military gravesides services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holston View Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post Hammond Post #265 and Gate City Post #3. The family will meet at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers are Shane Miller, George Ison, M.A. Lunsford, George Maddux, Jerry Broadwater, B.J. Broadwater, Tony Street, and Jim Addington.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Wellmont Health Systems, Amedysis Home Health, Mountain Region, Dr. Wolfe and Staff, the Scott Co. Life Saving Crew, Shane Miller and many other friends who have shown so much love and support.
