U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Georgetown College in 1859, from the Louisville Law School in 1861 and engaged in agricultural pursuits in Hardin County, Kentucky, (1861-70). Admitted to bar in 1870, he practice of law in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, was county judge of Hardin County (1870-74) and a member of the Kentucky State Senate (1877-81). In 1887, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1895. An unsuccessful candidate for re-election, he was appointed a member of the Dawes Indian Commission to reach a treaty with the Five Civilized Tribes (1895-98).
