WILLIAM COLGATE ABBE, son of George Waldo and Charlotte (Colgate) Abbe, born in New York City, June 9, 1843; died in New Brunswick, N. J., May 19, 1879.
He entered the Free Academy of New York in 1861, but soon enlisted, in 1862, in the 37th New York Militia. His first service was guard duty in Baltimore, where he was distinguished as always ready for emergency calls. His military spirit moved him to re-enlist in 1863, and he received a commission as Lieutenant in a regiment of colored militia. At Carlisle or Gettysburg, in July, 1863, he received a wound in the neck. He was located at Ship Island, at Port Hudson, and at Mobile when it was attacked; his regiment was active and under fire in the capture of the fort.
He was in the employ of the government until the close of the war. He was later in the employ of the Home Insurance Company, then was in the oil regions on business for his father for some time. After this he was connected with the firm of Colgate & Co., until his death, acting as their agent in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and southern cities.
His death, as the result of an injury received in 1863, occurred after a long illness, in New Brunswick, N. J., May 19, 1879.
Married in New Brunswick, N. J., February 9, 1870, ELIZA M. MARTIN sister of Mahlon Martin. She resides in New Brunswick.
