He was the son of Daniel Bass and Margaret Seibert Newkirk Bass and half-brother to outlaw Sam Bass. After the death of his first wife and Sam Bass' mother, Elizabeth Jane Sheeks, Daniel Bass married widow Margaret Newkirk. Charles was their only son, but he had 10 Bass half-siblings and two Newkirk half-siblings.

CHARLES BASS DEAD.
Verdict of Justice Edwards, Who Inquested the Remains.

Charles Bass, 36 years old, was found dead in bed in his room, on Loomis avenue, yesterday morning about daybreak....Justice W. M. Edwards, who held an inquest over the remains, returned a verdict to the effect that death was due to morphine self-administered.

The deseaced (sic) had lived in Dallas for years. He was born in Indiana. Many knew him well and said that he had quite a history. It is alleged that he was a brother of the famous Sam Bass, the outlaw, but that so far as known he had no relatives in this state.

In Dallas (1894) he worked for C. L. Jones & Company and roomed with Mrs. Louisa Hunter. Claude L. Jones is listed as a proprietor Oriental turf exchange, pool seller, and bookmaker at the Oriental Hotel. In 1897 Charles worked and lived with bartender Alexander L. Tyler. It was C. L. Jones who arranged for his funeral.
