United States Navy Rear Admiral, Retired. Admiral Altwegg enlisted in the Navy in 1947. After one year he was accepted to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. He earned his commission as a Naval Officer in 1952. RADM Altwegg served aboard numerous naval ships during his 38 years of active duty service including serving as the commanding officer of USS Mahan (DLG-11); USS Horne (DLG-30); Naval Ship Weapon Systems Engineering Station, Port Hueneme, California; Pacific Missile Test Center at Pt. Mugu, California; and Cruiser Destroyer Group Two. His last active duty assignment was as Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for surface warfare at the Pentagon. RADM Alwegg retired from active duty in 1985. In 1987 RADM Altwegg was appointed by the United States Congress to the civilian Senior Executive Service. In 2002 he joined the Missile Defense Agency and became that agency’s Executive Director soon afterward. He retired from the Senior Executive Service on February 23, 2011 after a combined 64 years of federal service. RADM earned many awards and accolades during his service including the Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Executive in 1994 and the Presidential Rank Award of Distinguished Executive in 2001 and 2007. Missile Defense Agency Director Lt. Gen. Patrick O'Reilly said of RADM Alwegg’s service “Dave's life was a testament to patriotism, dedication, leadership, mentorship and compassionate caring who inspired all of those that had the great fortune to serve with and know him. Dave's every action, every day, showed he truly cared for the men, women and mission of the US Navy, MDA, and our Nation.”
