Sally Griffin Thornton Stephens was the daughter of Jeptha and Martha Ragsdale Thornton. The family moved from Missouri to Oregon in 1865 by wagon train, staying in Yamhill County the first year. They then later moved to Oak Creek of Douglas County between Roseburg and Glide.

Sally married William Rooker Stephens (1847-1930) on Nov. 11, 1866 in McMinnville, Yamhill C., OR. They had the following children: William Clem, Martha Lorena (Dixon), James Emory, Charles Edward and Jeptha Madison.

Sally died when she was only 44 years old. Her husband then moved to Washington and remarried.
