Poet. Born at Plough Court in London, England, his father was a wholesale linen merchant who retired from business in the year of Alexander's birth. Because the family were Roman Catholics, the boy received most of his education at home, although he attended for brief periods R.C. schools at Twyford, near Winchester, and at Hyde Park Corner in London. In 1700, the family moved to Binfield, near Windsor Forest. At about this time, he wrote his famous "Ode to Solitude" and, less happily, developed a curvature of the spine which meant that his growth was stunted at four foot six. Pope's father died in 1717; two years later, Pope had made enough money from his translations of the "Iliad" and "Odyssey" to enable him and his mother to retire to a large villa in Twickenham, twelve miles S.W. of London, where he lived for the rest of his life. The memorial is in front of the altar, to the left-hand side, although the poet is, in fact, buried under the stone in front of that. It is marked with the letter "P".
