US Congressman. Born in Cresco, Howard County, Iowa he would at the age of thirteen move to Walla Walla, Washington with his parents, where he would attend the public schools and be graduated from Whitman College in 1923. He taught High School for a year and then was on the faculty of Central Washington College of Education at Ellensburg before and again for twelve years after completing his education at Columbia University in New York City in 1927. He taught at Columbia for two years, after being graduated, before returning to the faculty position that he had left in Washington state. This allowed him to be a livestock rancher and operator in addition to his teaching responsibilities. Grandson of Dudley Chase Haskell, politics were in his blood and as his grandfather before him he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-eighth and the consecutive seven Congresses to follow, serving from January 3, 1943-January 3, 1959. He did not run for re-election in 1858 and returned to his home state where he died and was buried at Yakima, Washington.
