US Congressman. He was born in Arlington, Vermont, and was educated locally, and completed preparatory studies. He then studied law with Isaac Warner in Cambridge, Vermont, and with the prominent lawyer, politician, and judge, Bates Turner in St. Albans, Vermont, and was admitted to the bar in 1810 and then relocated to Stowe, Vermont, where he commenced to practicing law. In 1812, he moved to Craftsbury, in Orleans County, Vermont. He then entered politics and he was elected as a Member of the Vermont House of Representatives and served four terms from 1821 to 1824, in 1826, 1828 to 1830, and again in 1832. He also served as Vermont State's Attorney for Orleans County, Vermont, from 1824 to 1828, Judge of the Probate Courts in 1839 and again in 1831, and as a Member of the Vermont State Senate from 1836 to 1838. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A member of the Whig Party, he then served Vermont's 4th District (Twenty-Seventh Congress) in the United States House of Representatives from 1841 to 1843. He declined to be a Candidate for renomination. After his term in the United States Congress expired on March 3, 1843, he was succeeded in office by United States Congressman Paul Dillingham Jr. He then resumed his practice of law and became involved in literary projects. He later moved to St. Albans, Vermont, and became Assistant Judge of the Franklin County, Vermont, Court from 1851 to 1854. A noted geologist and mineralogist, he was appointed Vermont's State Naturalist due to his knowledge in this field. He was the author of the works, "Unity Of Purpose," "Preliminary Report On The Natural History Of The State Of Vermont," and "On The Quadrature Of The Circle." He was married to Abigail Willoughby Young with whom he had a daughter named Augusta Maria Young. He passed away on June 7, 1857, at the age of 73 in St. Albans, Vermont, at the age of 73. His wife Abigail passed away on August 9, 1864, at the age of 78, and she was buried beside her husband.
