TOWER HILL -- Edwin F. Mathias Sr., 84 of Tower Hill died 12:20 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 16, 1996) in Heritage Manor, Pana.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday with Masonic rites at 7:45 p.m. Burial will be in Tower Hill Cemetery. Memorials: Masonic Home, Sullivan or donor's choice.
Mr. Mathias was born on July 26, 1912, in Tower Hill, the son of Anthony Brent and Rachel Ella Mills Mathias. He was a retired farmer and worked for many years as a welder for Oliver Corp., Shelbyville. He also was a substitute rural mail carrier in Tower Hill and worked in the Shelby County ASCS office. He served on the Tower Hill Township Board and was a past president of the Tower Hill High School Board. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Dollville, Mazeppa Chapter of Eastern Star, Past Master and treasurer of Masonic Lodge 493 of Tower Hill and was a 1931 graduate of Tower Hill High School. He married Elizabeth J. Frolich on April 17, 1938. She died on Dec. 26, 1986.
Surviving are his sons, Jerry Mathias and wife Lola of Tower Hill and Ed Mathias Jr. and wife Carol of Fisher; daughters, Marguerite Belval and husband Richard of Naperville and Rachel McElwee and husband Steve of Pana; sisters, Velma Barringer of Tower Hill and Marguerite McNeese and husband Woodrow of Shelbyville; 11 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; five great-stepgrandchildren; friend and companion, Opal Beccue.
He was preceded in death by wife, parents and brothers, Bill Mathias and Anthony Brent Mathias, Jr.
