US Senator. Self-educated. served in Revolutionary War, 1779-82. Massachusetts Legislature, 1785. Ordained a Universalist minister. Married Priscilla West. Moved to Barre, Vermont, 1798. Farmer and preacher. Studied law, admitted to bar and commenced practice, 1803. Vermont House, 1800-05, 1809-10, 1815. Judge, Orange County Court, 1802-09, 1816. Orange County member of state commission appointed to choose location for state capital, 1803. Chairman of committee that negotiated for settlement of boundary with Canada, 1804. US House, 1805-09, 1811-15. Chairman, Committee on Elections. Appointed federal judge for Territory of Indiana, 1812, but declined. Judge, Vermont Supreme Court, 1815-16. US Senate, 1817-18. Resigned to become collector of customs for district of Vermont, 1818-26. Moved to Swanton, 1819. After leaving customs post resumed law practice and farming. Son Wilbur was noted educator and Methodist minister, serving as first president of Connecticut's Wesleyan University.
