US Congressman. He moved with his parents to Missouri in 1836, attended Marion and Masonic Colleges, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in St. Louis, Missouri. During the Civil War, he served as Colonel in command of the 3rd Regiment, Missouri Volunteer Cavalry, Union Army. After the war, he was collector of internal revenue for the third district of Missouri, (1866-67). In 1873, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third, Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1879. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death at age 69.
