Professional Football Player. For nine seasons (1970 to 1978), he played at the tight-end position in the National Football League with the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers. Born James Michael Mandich, he attended Solon High School in Cleveland, Ohio and played collegiate football at the University of Michigan. While with the Wolverines, he was a key member of their 1969 Big Ten Conference Co-Championship squad which reached the Rose Bowl, as he was named team MVP and First Team All-American. Mandich, (who graduated with a BA in Economics) was selected by the Dolphins during the 2nd round of the 1970 NFL Draft and would appear in 119 career regular season games, recording 121 receptions for 1,406 yards with 23 touchdowns. He became a part of football history, as he played on three consecutive AFC Championship teams (1971 to 1973 Dolphins), which included the perfect 17-0 Super Bowl champion Miami squad of 1972, (he recorded 1 reception for 19 yards during Super Bowl VII on January 14th, 1973) and the Super Bowl-winning Dolphins' team of 1973 (he recorded 2 receptions for 21 yards during Super Bowl VIII on January 13th, 1974). He concluded his career as a member of the Super Bowl Champion XIII Pittsburgh Steelers' squad of 1978. After his football career, Mandich became a construction executive and a popular radio talk show host in the Miami-area. He also served as a Dolphins' radio analyst from 1992 to 2004 and 2007 to 2010. He was named to the University of Michigan's Hall of Honor in 1994, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004. In addition, he was involved with several charitable causes. He died from cancer of the bile duct.
