U.S. Congressman, Kansas Governor, U.S. Senator. Educated at Kansas State College, during World War I, he served as a Private in the U.S. Army, (1918-19). After the war, he engaged in agricultural pursuits, was a member of the Kansas State House of Representatives, (1929-33) and chairman of the Republican State committee, (1932-34). In 1935, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-fourth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1947. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was elected the 30th Governor of Kansas, in 1947, serving until his resignation in November 1950. He was then elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Clyde M. Reed, serving (1950-69). Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death at age 94.
