US Congressman. He was a Republican politician in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the 6th District of Kansas and serving from January 3, 1947, to January 3, 1961. Born the oldest of four children, he was the son of a farmer, William and his wife Ella Smith. After attending public school, he married Blanche Kinsley on December 27, 1912. Following entering officer training school at Fort Riley, he received his commission on January 31, 1916, served in the 47th Infantry 4th Division in the US Army during World War I and was discharged on September 4, 1919 at the rank of captain. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Kansas in 1920 and an LL.B. from the Yale University Law School in 1922 before beginning to practice law in Kansas. He served as the assistant attorney general from 1931 to 1940 and attorney for Kansas Highway Commission during the 1930s. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant colonel and commanding officer of the 635th Tank Destroyer Battalion from May of 1941 to December 1945. His battalion landed at Omaha Beach on June 8, 1944. Upon his military retirement as a brigadier general, he resumed the practice of law before entering politics. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1960 to the Eighty-seventh Congress, thus returning to Kansas to be engaged in the farming and ranching industry.
