US Senator. Born in Davie County, North Carolina, he was a salesman for the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, when he located to Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1909. He engaged in the manufacture of candy, plus served as trustee of the University of Chattanooga, Emory and Henry College, and Martha Washington College. In 1929, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Lawrence D. Tyson and served until 1931. Not a candidate for election, he resumed his candy manufacturing business until his death at age 78 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
