U.S. Congressman. Settling in Jacksonville, Alabama, in 1844, he engaged in agricultural pursuits, then moved and became a permanent resident of Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1850. During the Civil War, he was appointed an honorary Captain in the Union Army, was with General Thomas in the Chickamauga Campaign and was an assistant to General Steedman. After the war, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, serving (1873-75). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed agricultural pursuits until his death at age 65.
